PEI Young Farmers February 9th Meeting Minutes 2010

The last PEI Young Farmers meeting was held February 9th at 8pm at the Farm Center in Charlottetown.  Meeting was called to order at 8:12pm. With a total 0f 14 young farmers on hand, Greg and Tania from Mackenzie Produce were able to intrigue young farmers with their presence.  Greg and Tania operate a vegetable farm in Stratford and grow 115 acres of cabbage for the PEI market.  They also grow ogres and interested in the fall ornament market.  Greg and Tania were named Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers in 2009.  The interesting thing: the are new farmers, their parents were not farmers and started from scratch.  Next, Carla Buchanan from the Dept of Ag on PEI told the group about funding opportunities within the department.  Carla was invited back to every meeting so she can keep us updated on the Future Farmer Program, Buy PEI Program and Canada-PEI Business Development Program: Training and anything else that may be of interest to the Young Farmers.
