 CHANGES TO THE PEI YOUNG FARMERS ALUMNI REUNION

The reunion is now planned for SATURDAY OCT 23 at the BOXCAR LOUNGE in Emerald.  7pm Social.  7:30pm Roast Beef Dinner. 8:30 Awards and Presentations. Dance to follow at 9:30pm, Kickin Country

 

2010 PEI YOUNG FARMERS HIGH SCHOOL BURSARY ANNOUNCED!!!

Congradulations to Derek Profit who is the recipient for the 2010 PEI Young Farmers High School Bursary for $500. Derek attends KISH High School where he is at the top of his class. Derek believe agriculture will continue to be a big part of his life despite the economic conditions the ag sectors is experiencing. Derek is planning on attending NSAC with future plans to pursue a degree in engineering. Congradulations from the PEI Young Farmers!!!!! 

  Meeting Notes from PEI YF APRIL MEETING 2010

Meeting Notes April 14th, 2010—PEI Young Farmers

The last PEI Young Farmers meeting was held at Jeweldale Holsteins April 12 at 8pm by PEI YF members Kyle Jewel and his girlfriend, Jane Dandus.  23 PEI Young Farmers turned up for the tour and Kyle and Jane were very welcoming and showed the group the features of the barn.  Since the cows were mighty tame, many enjoyed the walk around seeing the milking parlour, ventilation system and how the manure storage is handled, feeding components etc.  Kyle also told us the story about how his family got farming etc.

Old Business
Health and Dental Plan
Background: PEI Young Farmer investigated the idea of a plan and a presentation about the plan and cost was made at the last meeting by Brent Gallant.
Action: Look into getting something under the PEI Federation of Agriculture as we will not always be members of the PEI Young Farmers.  Thank Brent Gallant for all his work on the proposed Health and Dental Plan for the PEI Young Farmers.
Curling Bonspiel
Background: The Curling Bonspiel 2010 was a success and the winning team was Ronda Bellefontaine, her sister and James Rhynes.  Pictures are on Facebook.
AYBS 2010
Background: The AYBS was held March 26-28th and the Young Farmers sponsored the meal for the group on the day of the farm tours.  President, Maria Smith was on hand to give a presentation about the young farmers group.  The winner of the European Trip was Derek Kennie. Maria was also there the entire weekend and next years location is to be in Nova Scotia and date is to be announced.
Action: That the Young Farmers continue to support this event.
PEI Young Farmers Summer Alumni Reunion
Background: The idea had been proposed to have an evening of past-present agriculture enthusiasts that were previously involved in the young farmer (junior farmers group) in the past.  An organizing committee of the EB and BOD and Greg Stavert are meeting regularly to organize the logistics. The date is Friday, August 5th at the New London Community Complex, starts at 6:30pm with mussels, Dinner at 7pm and Dance at 9:30pm and tickets are $20.  All member organizations of the Federation are being asked to become supporters of the event and their logo will be on the back of the ticket.  Tickets go on sale June 1st and all the EB and BOD and Greg Stavert will be selling tickets.  More information to come and stay posted on Facebook and the website.
Mentorship
PEI Potato Board
Background: Maria Smith and Greg Stavert presented the mentorship project to the potato board March 27 about having a PEI Young Farmer Rep rather than just a young famer who grows potatoes.  The PEI YF nominated rep was Greg Stavert.
Action: Potato Board was to let Maria and Greg know the status.  Recently, they have been notified that they have chosen Greg Stavert.

PEI Horticulture
Background: Travis Dykerman was nominated to be the rep and asked to get 5 minutes on the agenda.
Action: TBA

PEI Cattlemen Producers:
Background: Jeremy Stead was nominated and asked to talk at the upcoming AGM.
Action: Jeremy reported back that they needed a letter indicating the intent of the board position to the Cattleman’s Board and it shouldn’t be a problem.  They have to table a resolution at their next board meeting.

PEI Dairy Farmers
Background: Amy Bysterveldt was to get 5 minutes at the next Dairy Farmers of PEI meeting.
Action: Will provide feedback and update to the EB and BOD next meeting (May/June)

PEI Organic Council
Background: Organic Board proposed interest to doing more with the young farmers.
Action: Letter sent to the ED, Roy and he was given Mark Verleun’s contact information as being the representative from the PEI Young Farmers.

PEI Federation of Agriculture
Background: As stated in the PEI Young Farmers constitution: the President of the PEI YF will be the representative on the PEIFA Executive Board.
Action: Maria Smith has been attending the meetings and providing updates and feedback back to the members.

PEI Ag Sector Council
Background: Ryan Riordon is no longer the rep anymore, he has moved out of province.
Action: Amy Bystervelt has offered to be the rep for one year.

PEI Ag Awareness Council
Background: Pat Dunphy has been the rep and finds it difficult to attend the meetings during cropping and harvesting
Action: Amy Bystervelt has offered to be the rep for one year.

PEI Grains and Protein Council
Background: Pat Dunphy was asked to talk to the board.
Action: Letter sent to the Gerard Mol, the President and waiting to hear back.

PEI Pork
Background: Asked Pat Murray if he would be the representative and he declined.
Action: Try and find a young hog producer that would like to be the rep.

PEI Blueberry Growers
Background: Asked Will Terborg if he would talk to the Blueberry Board.
Action: No word

PEI Fur Breeders
Background: Never asked anyone because we have a member, Isaac Thompson and he is the President of the Association.

PEI Egg Farmers:
Background: Ask Greg Stavert
Action: Now that Greg Stavert is representing the Potato Board, may need to ask another person, TBD.

PEI Chicken Farmers
Background: Ask Cody Good to talk to the board or see if he is interested in the role
Action: no new information

New Business
High School Bursary
 Action: Applications being sought by the PEI Ag Sector Council.
Curtis’s Article to the Guardian Newspaper
 Background: Curtis Chaisson wrote a letter into the Guardian Newspaper describing the notorious and foolish acts surrounding the news of environment officers. It was in the editorial section of the Guardian in March.
 Action: commended Curtis on his good writing and speaking up skills.
Update Federation of Activities
 Some news about the recent resolutions at the AGM 2010 and actions being taken on them.
Scholarship October 2010 
 Action: Reminding members about the scholarship at NSAC worth $500, open to PEI residents.
Spring and Summer Break
 Action: Wishing everyone a healthy and safe cropping/ planting.
Projects 2010-2011
 Action: Maria Smith to send and complete the project for CYFF 2010-2011
Approve Projects and Per Diems for EB and BOD
Action: Mark Verleun tabled a motion that the pre diems be approved for the President $500, VP $250, Past President $150, VP Finance $150, VP Marketing $150, and VP Policy $150.  It was seconded by Kyle Jewel and all in favoured of the motion agreed to it. No one opposed.
PEI YF Memorabilia
Action: Ideas for the summer event and YF: Calendar, clock, pocket knife, thermometers, beer slip coolers, key chains, licence plates.(Great Ideas)
Summer Party Curtis Home (try again!) Date TBA
 Action: Curtis to notify of a house warming party in July—hopefully.
Other Notices
 Ryan Weeks is the rep for the Dunket River Project and details were given.
